What is Thermal Ear Candling?
A treatment to ease symptoms of sinusitis, rhinitus and tinnitus among others.
Thermal ear candling (also known as ear coning or ear candling) is an complementary therapy that involves placing a hollow, tapered or cone-shaped candle (see image above) into the outer ear canal and lighting the exposed end.
The candle, usually made of fabric impregnated with bee, paraffin, or soy wax, burns for several minutes in the ear before being extinguished. Many also have added medicinal herbs within the wax to aid the therapeutic benefits.
NB: Despite claims found online and through other channels, ear candling DOES NOT draw anything out from the ear. Were it to do so, it would cause severe damage to the ear canal and ear drum. It’s also pretty impossible to do that.
For more true and client-based, proven facts, what Thermal Ear Candling will do is …

When Ear Candling is NOT Recommended
As Ear Candling uses an open flame and involves placing the candle gently, just inside the outer ear canal, the proximity to the ear drum is real.
Therefore, as a practitioner I will NOT perform and ear candling treatment if …
Disclaimer: Thermal Ear Candling is not a medical treatment. It is a practice of complementary medicine.
As a complementary health practitioner, Sinead does not diagnose any patient or illness.
Busting the Myths
Ear Candling DOES NOT REMOVE ear wax and unfortunately many untrained, uninformed candle users have put that message out there over the years. The practise of candling, simply introduces warm air into the outer, middle and inner ear, softening existing wax and allow excess to drain more easily.
It also stimulates the movement of congestion within the ear canals, sinus cavaties and eustacian tubes, and encourages lymphatic drainage from the ENT areas. The ‘wax’ seen within the candle once it has been burned and opened up, is the natural burn off from the wax within the fabric candle.
It is impossible to create a ‘vacuum’ or to generate ‘suction’. To suggest so is incorrect and misinformed. Were wax to be ‘pulled out’ of the ear, the tempanic membrane would be damaged or destroyed.
Using a top quality candle is important as is using one that has an inner filter to prevent dust or wax entering the ear canal. The most important aspect of ear candling is the safety of the client and practitioner. All necessary precautions must be taken to ensure safety is paramount.

Note at top left of the image, the filter, which shows the end within the candle with residue. The end at the very tip has no residue, demonstrating the added safety level of the filter and candle.
Best Practices
Your practitioner needs to use good quality candles that have been certified as consumer safe, have excellent hygiene conditions within their practice, and be certified and insured to carry out the practice.
The therapist must have as a minimum a diploma in anatomy & physiology and be a certified first aider, not to mention have good fire, health and safety protocols within their clinic..

Thermal Ear Candling

The Standard Thermal Ear Candling treatment is a non-medical, natural therapy treatment. The usual burn time, per ear is between 9-13mins. The time it takes for the candle to burn is dependent on the level of congestion within the ear and sinus cavities.
Following a thorough consultation with Sinead, she will gentle press on the sinus areas of the face and trace the path of the eustacian tubes along the neck. She will also look to the relevant reflexes on the hands for the areas being treated. This assessment assists with Sinead being able to ensure a beneficial burn and good results for the clients. The treatment takes place on the plinth with the client lying comfortably for the duration.
It is important to listen to and read the Candling Aftercare Guidelines to ensure you protect the ears for 24 hours and support the therapeutic benefits of this wonderfully soothing holistic treatment.
This treatment takes approx. 30mins and costs €55
Deluxe Thermal Ear Candling

Deluxe Thermal Ear Candling begins with the client lying comfortably on the warmed plinth. Sinead will photograph the face straight on, for a before and after picture, where puffiness is part of the symptoms presented.
Ear candling as a process, as in the standard thermal ear candling, takes approx 9-13mins per ear. A pre-candling assessment is done to prepare and the client is warm and relaxed throughout.
Sinead then finishes this candling session with a beautiful facial massage which stimulates lymphatic drainage. It also improves blood flow and warmth to the affected areas, and aids the elimination process.
The therapy leaves you feeling wrapped in a cocoon of relaxation and comfort AND you benefit from the fantastic results, which include released sinuses, improved hearing, particularly of high tones and can even effect a change in the quality and timbre of your voice.
This treatment is beneficial to anyone who works in high dust or particle environments, such as painters, decorators, welders, mechanics, construction workers, mining, quarrying, carpentry, stonemasons, hair stylists, nail technicians, podiatrists, food manufacturing, or textile workers among others.
This treatment takes approx. 50 minutes and costs €80.
