MORE THAN A TREATMENT: Holistic Therapies for People with Additional Needs

When we think about healthcare, we often think about appointments, assessments, treatments and outcomes. Yet some of the most meaningful moments of care can be found in something much quieter.

A reassuring presence. A familiar face. Gentle touch.

Time without expectation. The opportunity to simply relax.

For children and adults with additional needs, these moments can be incredibly important. Whether someone is living with an intellectual disability, autism, a neurological condition, a physical disability, sensory differences, acquired brain injury or complex additional needs, life can often involve countless appointments, routines and demands.

Opportunities to simply slow down, feel safe and receive care without pressure can be few and far between. This is where holistic therapies can play an important role.

At SCK Holistic Therapies, I don’t begin by asking, “What treatment do you need?” I begin by asking, “Tell me about the person.” Because every individual is exactly that… an individual.

No two people experience the world in the same way. No two people respond to touch, communication, sound or environment in exactly the same way. That is why every treatment I provide is tailored to the person in front of me, rather than following a standard routine or protocol.

Whether I am providing Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Reiki or Thermal Ear Candling (where appropriate), my focus is always the same: creating a calm, respectful and supportive experience that meets the individual where they are.

Looking Beyond Words

One of the greatest lessons I have learned throughout my career is that communication is about so much more than speech.

Some people communicate through words. Others communicate through facial expressions, breathing, eye contact, body language, movement, sounds or changes in muscle tone.

Sometimes a slight relaxation of the shoulders tells you more than a conversation ever could. Sometimes a smile appears where there wasn’t one before.

Sometimes the greatest compliment is someone simply allowing you into their personal space and trusting you enough to relax.

These are the moments I pay attention to. They guide every treatment I provide.

A Lifetime of Learning From People

My understanding of supporting people with additional needs has developed over more than 35 years through roles in training, learning and development, adult education, children’s camps and volunteering with organisations including the Irish Wheelchair Association, Willow Domestic Services and Enable Ireland.

Since qualifying as a holistic therapist over twenty years ago, and particularly following the completion of my Honours Degree in Psychology, I have continued to deepen that knowledge, strengthening my understanding of behaviour, communication, emotional wellbeing and the many different ways people experience and respond to the world around them.

Along the way, I have also worked as a Home Tutor, a Behavioural Support Worker and delivered talks for family forums, experiences that have allowed me to work alongside children, adults, families, carers, educators and multidisciplinary teams supporting people with moderate, severe and profound intellectual and physical disabilities.

These experiences have shaped far more than my professional knowledge. They have shaped how I see people.

They have taught me that every behaviour has meaning. That every person deserves dignity. That communication doesn’t always require words.

They have also taught me that some of the greatest acts of care come simply from being fully present with another human being and those beliefs quietly underpin every appointment I provide.

The Quiet Power of Therapeutic Touch

Touch is one of the first ways we experience comfort in life.

Long before we understand language, we understand reassurance through gentle, caring touch. Throughout our lives, that need never truly disappears.

When provided professionally, respectfully and always with appropriate consent, touch therapies such as Reflexology, Indian Head Massage and Reiki can offer a profound sense of comfort and relaxation.

For many people with additional needs, life can involve heightened anxiety, sensory overload, physical discomfort, muscle tension or emotional fatigue.

Holistic therapies are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure medical conditions. They do, however, offer valuable opportunities to support relaxation, emotional wellbeing and quality of life as part of a person’s overall care.

Sometimes the changes are subtle. Breathing becomes slower.

Hands begin to relax. Muscles soften.

Sleep improves. An anxious expression fades.

Someone who rarely keeps still settles peacefully for twenty or thirty minutes. For parents, carers and support staff, these moments can be deeply meaningful. Not because they solve every challenge. But because they offer comfort.

Connection. Peace. Sometimes that is exactly what is needed most.

Every Treatment is Adapted to the Individual

There is no such thing as a “standard treatment” in my clinics.

Every appointment begins with understanding the individual, their preferences, their comfort levels and any practical considerations that may influence the treatment.

This might include:

  • sensory preferences
  • communication style
  • mobility and positioning
  • medical history
  • fatigue levels
  • anxiety
  • environmental considerations
  • personal choice

Some people enjoy a full Reflexology treatment. Others may prefer a shorter session. Some respond beautifully to Indian Head Massage.

Others find Reiki to be the gentlest and most appropriate approach or enjoy it added to their standard complementary treatment.

Occasionally, the treatment I planned is not the treatment that happens. And that’s perfectly okay. The person always comes before the therapy.

If someone needs time to become familiar with me, that’s where we begin. If they simply want to sit quietly and get used to the environment, that’s absolutely fine.

Holistic therapy should never feel like something that is being done to someone. It should feel like something we experience with them.

Bringing the Clinic to You

One aspect of my work that many families and organisations particularly value is my mobile holistic therapy service.

Not everyone is able to travel comfortably to a clinic. For some people, travelling can be physically exhausting. For others, unfamiliar environments may create anxiety or sensory overload.

Some individuals are simply happiest and most relaxed in the surroundings they know best.

That is why I am delighted to offer mobile appointments throughout the county of Meath and beyond. Visiting people in their own homes, residential services, supported living environments, day services and community settings are a pleasure to provide. Costs depend on location but generally the costs outline on the website are for locations within a 15km radius of the Navan, Co. Meath clinic.

However, I don’t simply arrive carrying a treatment couch. I bring the clinic with me. Soft music. Fresh towels. Warm blankets. Comfortable supports.

Gentle touches that help transform an ordinary room into a calm therapeutic space. Even the familiar room spritz that many of my regular clients associate with their treatments comes with me.

These small details matter.

Over time, familiar sounds, scents and surroundings become part of the therapeutic experience.

As the music begins to play or a familiar fragrance fills the room, many clients visibly begin to relax.

The body remembers. The mind remembers.

Those familiar sensory cues can help create an immediate sense of safety, reassurance and continuity, allowing the individual to settle into the moment and receive the full benefit of the care being offered.

Supporting Families, Carers and Organisations

Holistic therapy is never just about the individual receiving the treatment. It is also about supporting the people who care for them every day; the parents, siblings, partners. Even support workers, healthcare professionals, residential staff ad Day service teams.

Behind every individual is often a network of people who dedicate their time, energy and compassion to ensuring that person enjoys the best quality of life possible. I have enormous respect for those carers.

I understand that no one knows an individual better than the people who spend every day alongside them. That is why I see every treatment as a collaborative process.

Before beginning, I take time to understand the person’s likes and dislikes, how they communicate, any sensory preferences, positioning requirements and anything else that will help create a positive experience.

Families often tell me about favourite music, comforting routines or the little things that help someone feel safe. Support staff may notice subtle changes in mood or behaviour that help me adapt my approach.

Every piece of information matters because every person matters. Working together allows us to create an experience that feels calm, respectful and centred around the individual rather than simply delivering a treatment.

Working Alongside Disability Services

Over the years I have had the privilege of working alongside individuals, families and organisations supporting people with additional needs.

Whether I am visiting a private home, a residential service or a day service, my aim remains exactly the same: to provide professional, compassionate care that respects the dignity, individuality and wellbeing of every person I meet.

I am always happy to work alongside support teams to ensure appointments fit comfortably within existing routines and care plans.

This collaborative approach makes mobile holistic therapy an excellent option for organisations wishing to enhance the wellbeing of the people they support.

Whether you represent a family-run residential home or a larger organisation such as The Talbot Group, St. John of God Community Services, Prosper Group, Tusla, Enable Ireland or another disability service provider, I would be delighted to discuss how holistic therapies may complement the support already being provided.

Every organisation is different. Every service user is different.

That is why flexibility, communication and individualised care are at the heart of everything I do.

Choosing the Right Therapist Matters

Not every holistic therapist chooses to work with people who have additional needs. Likewise, not every therapist is comfortable providing treatments outside of a clinic setting. That is perfectly understandable.

Working with children and adults who have moderate, severe or profound intellectual and physical disabilities requires patience, flexibility, empathy and a willingness to adapt every aspect of a treatment to suit the individual.

It also requires an understanding that success isn’t measured by completing a sixty-minute treatment exactly as planned.

Sometimes success is a smile. Sometimes it is ten peaceful minutes. Sometimes it is simply building enough trust for someone to feel comfortable inviting you back. Those moments are every bit as valuable.

For me, holistic therapy has never been about delivering a routine. It has always been about building relationships based on trust, dignity and genuine human connection.

More Than a Treatment

When people ask what I do, the simplest answer is that I am a holistic therapist. But that description never feels quite complete. What I really do is create space, safe space for people to slow down.

Space to breathe. Space to feel safe. Space to be cared for without expectation.

Every treatment is an opportunity to meet someone exactly where they are, whether that means providing Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Reiki or simply adapting the appointment to whatever feels right on the day.

Because holistic therapy isn’t about perfection. It isn’t about ticking boxes. It isn’t about following the same routine with every client. It is about recognising the unique person in front of you and responding with kindness, professionalism, respect and care.

That has been the philosophy guiding my work throughout my career, and it continues to shape every appointment I provide today.

A Few Final Thoughts

  • Every person deserves care that respects their individuality, dignity and preferred way of communicating.
  • Holistic therapies are adapted to the person, not the other way around.
  • Familiar surroundings and a trusted therapist can make a significant difference to the therapeutic experience.
  • Sometimes the greatest outcome isn’t a treatment completed exactly as planned, but a person feeling safe, relaxed and genuinely cared for.

Could Holistic Therapy Benefit Someone You Care About?

If you are considering holistic therapy for a family member or someone you support professionally, I would be delighted to have an informal conversation with you before you book.

Together we can discuss the individual’s needs, communication style, mobility, sensory preferences and any practical considerations to ensure that the treatment is appropriate and tailored to them from the very beginning.

Whether appointments take place in my clinic or in the comfort of their own home, residential service or day centre, my aim is always the same: to provide thoughtful, person-centred care that supports relaxation, wellbeing and quality of life.

If you are unsure which therapy would be most suitable, please don’t worry. I am always happy to guide you towards the most appropriate treatment.

Sometimes the first step is simply a conversation. I’d be honoured to have that conversation with you.
