WHAT HAPPENS DURING A HEADSPACE SESSION?
Every Session Begins with You
One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “What actually happens during a Headspace Session?” The truthful answer is that no two sessions are ever the same because no two people arrive with the same experiences, circumstances or questions.
Some people book because they have one particular issue they want to work through. Others simply know that life has become noisy and they’re struggling to hear themselves think. They often apologise because they don’t know where to begin, but that’s never something you need to worry about. You don’t need an agenda, a notebook full of questions or a perfectly organised explanation of what’s going on. If your thoughts feel muddled, that’s perfectly okay because making sense of the muddle is part of the session.
The Headspace Sessions aren’t about following a script or working through a checklist. They’re about creating enough time and space for you to think properly, perhaps for the first time in weeks or even months. Together we’ll explore whatever has brought you there, gently separating what’s important from what’s simply adding to the noise.
Quite often, people discover they already knew the answer. They simply needed the space to hear themselves say it out loud.
Meeting in Person
If you’ve booked an in-person Headspace Session, we won’t be meeting in a clinic or therapy room. Instead, we’ll arrange to meet somewhere like a quiet hotel lobby or a spacious coffee shop where we can sit comfortably without feeling rushed.
That sometimes surprises people, but it’s a deliberate part of the process rather than a matter of convenience. The Headspace Sessions aren’t therapy, so I don’t believe they need to take place in a clinical environment. I want the setting to reflect the purpose of the work rather than create expectations of something the sessions were never intended to be.
Meeting in an everyday environment also encourages a different kind of conversation. We can acknowledge what’s happening without becoming completely consumed by it. The emphasis stays on understanding your situation, gaining perspective and deciding what comes next. It’s practical, grounded and focused on helping you move forward.
People often tell me afterwards that they enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. It doesn’t feel formal or intimidating. It simply feels like having the time and permission to stop, think and breathe for a while.
Meeting Online
If we’re meeting online, very little changes apart from the screen between us. The conversation is exactly the same, and most people tell me they forget they’re online within the first few minutes because the discussion quickly becomes the focus.
The only thing I ask is that you give yourself the same consideration you would if we were meeting face to face. Find somewhere reasonably quiet, make yourself comfortable, silence your phone if you can and allow yourself permission to be fully present. Make a cup of tea, settle into your favourite chair and let the next hour belong to you.
We’re all so used to multitasking that uninterrupted thinking has become something of a luxury. The Headspace Sessions are an opportunity to press pause for a little while and give your own thoughts the attention they’ve probably been asking for.
Following the Conversation
People sometimes ask if I have a set list of questions that I work through. I don’t, because every conversation develops differently. My role isn’t to steer you towards my conclusions. It’s to help you explore your own thinking more clearly.
Sometimes I’ll ask a question that helps you see something from a different angle. Sometimes I’ll notice a pattern or gently challenge an assumption you’ve been holding onto. Other times, I’ll simply reflect back something you’ve said because hearing your own words spoken aloud can often reveal more than you expected.
I’ve learned over the years that most people are far more capable than they give themselves credit for. They don’t necessarily need someone to provide the answers. More often, they need someone to create the space where those answers can emerge naturally.
Untangling the Wool
I often compare the process to untangling a ball of wool. At first, everything seems wrapped around everything else. Work affects home, home affects relationships, relationships affect confidence and confidence influences decisions. Before long it becomes impossible to know where one issue ends and another begins.
The aim isn’t to cut the wool and start again. It’s to patiently find the thread, loosen the knots and begin making sense of what looked impossible when you first arrived. Sometimes you’ll discover that what felt like ten different problems is actually one issue quietly influencing everything else.
Most people don’t need more information. They need enough headspace to make sense of the information they already have. – Sinead C Kavanagh
Clarity rarely arrives with a dramatic lightbulb moment. More often, it appears quietly as the conversation unfolds and everything begins to settle into its proper place.
What You’ll Leave With
By the end of a Headspace Session, my hope is that you’ll leave with more than simply an hour’s conversation. My hope is that you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your situation, greater confidence in your own thinking and a realistic sense of what comes next.
Some people leave with a practical action plan. Others leave having made a decision they’ve been putting off for weeks or even months. Sometimes the greatest outcome is simply the feeling that your head has stopped spinning and everything no longer feels quite so overwhelming.
Life outside the room may be exactly as you left it. What often changes is the way you see it and sometimes, that’s all it takes.
For some people, one Headspace Session is all that’s needed to gain the clarity they were looking for. Others find that a small number of sessions allows them to work through different layers or challenges as they arise.
There is no formula and no expectation. We’ll simply decide together what feels right for you, if anything at all.
That’s a conversation for another day.
