Who Are Headspace Sessions For?
It’s Less About Who You Are and More About Where You Are
It’s an obvious question if you’ve haven’t come across the concept before, “Who are Headspace Sessions for?” The truthful answer is that they are for almost anyone.
That might sound like I’m avoiding the question, but I’m really not. I’ve learned over the years that it isn’t someone’s age, job title or background that determines whether the Headspace Sessions are right for them. It’s where they find themselves in life at that particular moment.
From the age of 16 upwards, every one of us needs headspace from time to time. Life has a habit of becoming busy, complicated and noisy. We all carry responsibilities, expectations and decisions, and sometimes it feels as though everything is demanding our attention at once.
It’s not unusual to reach a point where your head feels full, yet nothing feels clear.
That is usually when people find me.
It’s About Feeling Overwhelmed, Not Being a Particular Type of Person
The people who book a Headspace Session don’t all have the same story.
One person may be facing a career decision, while another is navigating a relationship, family situation or life change. Someone else may be running a business and feeling completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of decisions they have to make every day. Another may simply know that something doesn’t feel right but can’t quite explain why.
On paper, they seemingly have very little in common, however what they do have in common is how they’re feeling. That is overwhelmed, confused and swamped by information, opinions, choices and possibilities.
Sometimes they’re overthinking every option and other times they are struggling to see any options at all. Quite often, they are so close to the situation that they simply can’t see the wood for the trees.
When Everyone Has an Opinion
Most of us turn to the people we love when life feels difficult. That’s perfectly natural.
Family and friends usually want the very best for us, and their support can be invaluable. However, the people closest to us are emotionally invested in our lives. Their advice is shaped by their own experiences, their own worries and, quite often, what they would do if they were in our shoes and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
The problem is that’s not always that helpful because they’re in the same or neighbouring forest! Sometimes, what we really need is a completely different and independent perspective. That means talking to someone who isn’t taking sides or trying to rescue us.
It is talking to someone who is prepared to listen properly, attentively and actively. They are asking the right questions to nudge the real information out and they gently challenge our thinking where and when that is necessary.
Occasionally we need things said to us plainly. Not harshly and certainly not without compassion and empathy, but straightforward and honestly.
There are times when a difficult truth, shared with kindness, is far more valuable than false reassurance or someone telling us what they think we want to hear.
Honesty creates clarity, and clarity helps us move forward.
You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out
One thing I hear quite often is, “I don’t even know where to start.” PLEASE, don’t let that stop you from booking. You don’t need a list of questions. You don’t need to arrive with neatly organised thoughts. You don’t need to know exactly what the problem is.
Come in with your brain fried or feeling that you could spontaneously combust! That what the sessions are for. Space, time, and care with practicality to the fore.
Many people arrive with what feels like a tangled ball of wool in their heads. Every thought is wrapped around another, and they can’t work out where one problem ends and another begins.
That’s absolutely fine, because untangling the wool is part of the process.
Together, we slow everything down, separate facts from assumptions, identify what really matters and begin making sense of it all. More often than not, what felt like ten different problems turns out to be one or two issues that have become buried beneath everything else and are impacting or influencing the outcome of everything else.
Have you ever knit anything? Have you ever created stiches only to discover you’ve dropped some or the tension on the wool went lax? You’re still using wool but sometimes you need to regroup, unpick and reassess the outcome your hoping for before you can take up the needles again.
Don’t Wait Until You’re in Crisis
Another misconception is that people only seek this kind of support when life has completely fallen apart, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, I’d much rather people came before they reached that point.
The Headspace Sessions aren’t intended to replace counselling, psychotherapy or other specialist mental health services. They have a very different purpose. If I believe you’re looking for support that’s outside my scope of practice, I’ll tell you honestly. I’d much rather help you find the right support than provide a service that isn’t what you need
Many people who come for a Headspace Session are functioning perfectly well. They’re going to work, looking after family, running businesses and keeping all the plates spinning.
They’re simply tired and weary, feel mentally cluttered and although aware that they’re carrying more than they need to don’t know what’s safe to put down. At times like these all that is missing is the opportunity to pause long enough to hear themselves think again.
So, Who Are the Headspace Sessions Really For?
The Headspace Sessions are for anyone who feels they would benefit from time, space and an honest conversation. They are for people who feel overwhelmed by the noise of everyday life and for people facing change, uncertainty or important decisions.
They also work for those seeking clarity rather than someone else to make decisions on their behalf and those who are ready to understand their situation more clearly and take practical, realistic steps forward.
Ultimately, the Headspace Sessions aren’t defined by who you are. They’re defined by what you need.
If you need space to think, someone to listen without judgement and support to untangle whatever is occupying your mind, then the Headspace Sessions may be exactly what you’re looking for, because often the greatest gift we can give ourselves isn’t another opinion. It’s simply Headspace.
